There are two major types of colors for ox horn buttons: natural primary color (without dyeing process) and artificial dyeing process, which can meet the different needs of customers.

 

一, Natural primary color (without dyeing process)

Features: Retains the original texture and color of the ox horn, has the highest environmental friendliness, and is suitable for brands that pursue a natural style.
 

1.Process steps:

Raw material screening

Water buffalo horns (dark gray/dark brown) and yellow buffalo horns (light yellow/amber) are the main raw materials. The depth of the color depends on the stratum corneum (the outer layer is dark and the inner layer is light).

2.Cutting and shaping

After cutting as required, retain the original cross-sectional texture (concentric circular growth lines can be seen).

3.Polishing treatment:

Rough polishing (to remove burrs) → Fine polishing (high gloss or matte effect), the degree of polishing affects the color transparency (high gloss makes the color darker)
 

二, Artificial dyeing process

 

The color is changed through soaking or high-temperature penetration, which is divided into two methods: traditional dyeing and modern environmentally friendly dyeing.

 

1. Traditional dyeing (chemical penetration)

 

Process steps:

• Degreasing treatment:Remove the grease on the surface of the ox horn with an alkaline solution (such as sodium hydroxide) to enhance the adsorption of the dye.
• High-temperature dyeing：Soak the horn buttons in acid dye or direct dye, heat them to 80-100℃ and maintain for 2-4 hours to allow the color to penetrate inside.
• Common colors:black, dark brown, Burgundy (Multiple dyeing is required to achieve a uniform effect).
• Fixation treatment：Use a fixative (such as tannic acid) to prevent fading, and finally rinse and dry.

 

Advantages and disadvantages:

• High saturation of color, uniform tone for large quantities.
• Some chemical dyes may not comply with the EU REACH regulation (environmental protection certification should be confirmed in advance).

 

2. Modern eco-friendly dyeing (Plant/mineral dyes)

 

Process steps:

• Extraction of natural dyes
• Black: Gallnut + iron salt mordant dyeing/Dark brown: Walnut shell boiled dyeing/Red: Sapwood extract.

 

Low-temperature cold dyeing

Slowly penetrate at temperatures below 60℃ to avoid damage to the structure of the horn fibers caused by high temperatures.

 

Ultraviolet color fixation

Cure the color through light exposure and reduce the use of chemical color-fixing agents.
