What is Snap Buttons?
Snap button is a pair of interlocking discs, made out of a metal or plastic, commonly used in place of traditional buttons to fasten clothing and for similar purposes. A circular lip under one disc fits into a groove on the top of the other, holding them fast until a certain amount of force is applied. Different types of snaps can be attached to fabric or leather by riveting with a punch and die set specific to the type of rivet snaps used (striking the punch with a hammer to splay the tail), sewing, or plying with special snap pliers.
Advantages of Snap Buttons
Five Reasons Why Snap Buttons Are a Wardrobe Essential
Easy to Use
Snap buttons are incredibly easy to use, making them a convenient fastening option for all types of clothing. Whether you’re in a rush to get dressed or just prefer a simple and quick method of fastening your clothes, snap buttons can be easily opened and closed with just a push or pull. This makes them an ideal choice for individuals with limited dexterity or mobility issues.
Versatile
Snap buttons can be found on a wide range of clothing items, from shirts and jackets to pants and even shoes. Their versatility makes them a great option for both casual and formal wear, and they can easily be incorporated into various styles and designs. Whether you’re looking for a classic button-up shirt or a trendy denim jacket, snap buttons offer a modern and stylish alternative to traditional fastenings.
Durable
One of the major benefits of snap buttons is their durability. Unlike traditional buttons, which can easily become loose or fall off with frequent use, snap buttons are designed to withstand wear and tear. They are less likely to break or come undone, making them a reliable and long-lasting fastening option for your clothing.
Aesthetically Pleasing
Snap buttons can add a stylish and fashionable touch to your wardrobe. They come in a variety of finishes and designs, allowing you to choose the perfect style to complement your clothing. From sleek and modern metallic finishes to classic and understated options, snap buttons can enhance the overall look of your outfits and add a subtle yet stylish detail.
Convenient for Alterations
If you’re someone who enjoys altering or customizing your clothing, snap buttons are a great choice. Unlike traditional buttons, which require needle and thread to attach, snap buttons can easily be added or removed without any sewing. This makes them a convenient option for DIY clothing projects and alterations, allowing you to personalize your wardrobe without the need for specialized tools or skills.
Types Of Snap Buttons
Magnetic Snap
Full disclosure - I don’t think there’s a good reason to use the snaps we’re discussing in this category for baby clothes - but they are very useful for things like bags and even adult utility type clothes! You’re probably familiar with the type of magnetic closure with the prongs on the back - again, you can find these at pretty much any fabric store that has a haberdashery section… however, the fun doesn’t end there! You can also get them with a rivet style backing! These are great for when the back of the snap area will show.
Spring Snap
The spring snap is a close cousin of the utility snap, but is a slightly more sophisticated option. Inside the socket side of the snap is a small spring which holds two wires just inside the opening. These gently hang on to the stud side of the snap, which often has a small indentation halfway up the shaft to hold the spring, so the act of snapping and unsnapping is spring-based rather than the brute-force mechanism of a ring snap.
Open-Ring Or Prong Snap
Probably the most easily accessible variety of metal snaps, you'll recognise these from the fasteners section of pretty much any sewing shop. Instead of a hollow shank, the cap on this style of snap has five little triangular prongs that fit into the ring on the other side of the snap. I have found that there's a difference between name-brand and off-brand prong snaps: the name-brand ones are made from a thicker metal so the prongs are less likely to make little indentations in the other side of the snap - don’t worry though: there are lots of name brands to choose from.
Kam Snap
KAM snaps are a bit of an outlier in this little grouping - the only plastic in a sea of metal alternatives. If you're worried that the kiddo might have sensitive skin (if a parent has a nickel allergy, for example) these are a good pick. They're also heckin' cheap in large quantities, so great if you're planning on starting up a cloth diaper business or a onesie factory. The other thing that sucks people in to team KAM Snap is that they come in a veritable cornucopia of different colors. Regardless of your onesie color, there will be a close match in KAM snap form.

A sew-on snap is comprised of two functional parts: A ball and a socket. Along the outer edge, each ball and socket contains sewing holes (usually 4) through which the snaps are hand sewn to the garment using a whipstitch. The thread is usually doubled for durability and should match the color of the fabric/garment. When sewn to lapped edges (garment edges that overlap), the socket, which is the piece consisting of the "fastening hole", is always sewn on the bottom while the ball, which is the piece housing the "ball" extension, should correspond to the top and be sewn to the underside of the top layer.
The socket snap piece has an extension on it's back side (into which the ball piece is inserted)- if this socket is sewn to the top layer of the lapped edges, this extension will show through the fabric on the face of the garment jeopardizing its smoothness and adding bulkiness and unnecessary wrinkles.
The second reason for this placement simply consists in the natural way our hands operate: It is easier to insert the ball into the socket while it is positioned at the bottom than vise versa.
5 Ways to Use Snap Buttons in Your Wardrobe
Convert a Button-Up Shirt to a Snap Shirt
If you have a button-up shirt that you find yourself struggling to fasten, consider replacing the traditional buttons with snap buttons. This will make it easier and quicker to close your shirt, especially in a rush. Plus, it adds a modern and stylish touch to an otherwise classic garment.
Create Easy Access on Pants
Snap buttons are also a great option for pants, especially for those with mobility issues or simply prefer convenience. Use them to replace the traditional button or zipper on your jeans or trousers for quick and easy access. This will also give your pants a unique and trendy look that sets them apart from the rest.
Add a Closure to a Cardigan or Sweater
If you have a cardigan or sweater that doesn’t come with a closure, consider adding snap buttons to create a secure fastening. This will not only keep you warm and cozy but also give your outerwear a polished and put-together look. You can also mix and match different colors and sizes of snap buttons to add a fun and playful element to your garment.
Customize Your Accessories
In addition to clothing, snap buttons can be used to customize your accessories. For example, attach snap buttons to the straps of your handbag or the collar of your scarf for a unique and personalized touch. You can also use them to create detachable embellishments for your hats, belts, or even shoes.
Replace Broken or Worn Out Fastenings
If you have a garment with broken or worn out fastenings, such as buttons or zippers, consider replacing them with snap buttons. This will not only extend the life of your clothing but also give them a fresh and updated look. Plus, snap buttons are durable and secure, ensuring that your garments will stay fastened for years to come.
Snap Buttons Vs. Zippers: Which Is the Better Fastener?
When it comes to fastening garments and accessories, two of the most popular options are snap buttons and zippers. Both offer their own set of advantages and disadvantages, and deciding which one is the better fastener ultimately comes down to individual preferences and the specific requirements of the garment or accessory.
Snap buttons, also known as snap fasteners or press studs, are a common type of fastener that consists of two discs, one with a protruding knob and the other with a socket. When the two discs are brought together, the knob snaps into the socket, creating a secure closure. snap buttons are durable, easy to use, and can add a decorative element to a garment. They are often used on shirts, jackets, and bags.
On the other hand, zippers are continuous fastening devices that consist of two strips of fabric with interlocking metal or plastic teeth. Zippers are versatile and can provide a secure closure that extends the length of the garment or accessory. They are commonly used on pants, dresses, jackets, and bags.
So, which fastener is better? The answer ultimately depends on the specific requirements of the garment or accessory.
In terms of durability, snap buttons are generally considered to be more reliable than zippers. Zippers can be prone to jamming or breaking, especially if they are made from low-quality materials. snap buttons, on the other hand, are less likely to fail and can withstand regular wear and tear.
Ease of use is another factor to consider. While zippers can provide a more secure closure, they can be difficult to operate, especially for individuals with limited hand mobility. snap buttons, on the other hand, are easy to open and close, making them a better option for people who may struggle with zippers.
When it comes to aesthetics, snap buttons can add a decorative element to a garment, while zippers are often more discreet. snap buttons come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and finishes, allowing for greater customization and design options.
Tips on How to Install Snap Buttons
Interfacing before installing snap buttons
To get snap buttons that will last, start by interfacing your fabric on the wrong side with thin, flexible iron-on adhesive. You can use a long strip along the button placket, or you can use a small square of iron-on fabric to cover only the snap button area. If you forgot to apply the interfacing, you can add a small square of tape on the wrong side, between the fabric of your project and the snap button. Once the snap button is in place, simply cut around the snap button, leaving a 2mm margin, for an almost invisible result.
Place the snap buttons at the right place
There is a rule of thumb for positioning snap buttons correctly. Traditionally, the female snap button is placed on top and the male snap button underneath. On a closed button placket, it is the outer part of the female snap buttons that is visible.
To place your two snap button parts opposite each other (a little challenge!), here are some tips:
Place the snap buttons and make a mark with a dry erase pen or tailor's chalk,
Place the snap buttons and make a temporary mark with a fingernail by pinching the location and then making a mark with erasable pen or chalk
Pin a needle into the heart of the location you have identified on the top, so you can see where it stitches the bottom placket. It is then easy to make a small mark with pen or chalk.
Finally, if you put a snap button on wrong, you can always undo it and start again. You can open it with a punch for example, or not too sharp scissors, trying to open it on the side.
The socket and stud are typically made of metal or plastic, with a specially designed shape that allows them to interlock when force is applied. This design ensures that the two pieces lock into place securely, preventing them from coming apart unintentionally.
The force required to press the two pieces together is also important. Most snap buttons are designed to require a certain amount of pressure to close, ensuring that they stay fastened even under stress. This is achieved through the use of precise engineering and materials with the right amount of flexibility and strength.
One common type of snap button, known as a “spring snap” or a “ring snap,” utilizes a spring mechanism to provide the necessary force to close the button. This spring ensures that the button stays closed and does not come undone easily, making it ideal for use in clothing and accessories.
In addition to the design and materials, the manufacturing process also plays a crucial role in the functionality of snap buttons. Precise molding and machining techniques are used to create the intricate shapes and mechanisms needed for the buttons to work properly.
The science behind snap button press technology is a fascinating blend of materials science, engineering, and manufacturing know-how. The result is a simple yet highly effective fastening solution that is used in a wide range of applications.

How Snap Button Has Revolutionized Clothing Fastening
Before the snap button was invented, clothing fastening was a time-consuming and cumbersome process. Buttons and zippers were the primary methods of closure, and they were often difficult to fasten and unfasten. Additionally, these closures were prone to breaking and required regular maintenance.
The snap button changed all that. With its innovative design, it allowed for a quick and secure fastening of clothing with just a simple press of the fingers. This made getting dressed much easier and quicker for individuals of all ages and abilities.
The introduction of the snap button had a significant impact on the fashion industry. Designers were able to incorporate this fastening method into their designs, creating garments that were not only easier to wear but also more stylish and modern. The snap fastening became a popular feature in clothing, from everyday wear to high fashion.
The snap button also had a positive impact on the manufacturing process. It allowed for quicker and more efficient production of clothing, as it was easier to add the snap fastening than to sew on individual buttons or install zippers. This helped to lower production costs and improve the quality of the finished garments.
In addition to its convenience, the snap button also brought about a new level of versatility in clothing design. With the ability to easily add and remove fastenings, garments became more adaptable and customizable. This opened up new opportunities for designers to create clothing that could be worn in different ways, catering to a wider range of body types and personal preferences.
The snap button has also had a positive impact on sustainability in the fashion industry. Because it is durable and long-lasting, it reduces the need for constant replacement and repair of closures. This, in turn, helps to reduce the amount of waste generated by the fashion industry.
